Robert Hutchinson

My big dream is to see human beings fall in love with themselves and the planet again. Why? Because I believe this is the key to creating a world that works better in the future. I support inspiring and interesting people who want to invest in themselves as the first step towards creating change in their world.

In many ways I’m not very different to the clients I work with. I recognise the fear and doubt that can accompany success. I recognise the loneliness in being an unconventional leader. I recognise the dull feeling of following a path simply because you found yourself on it. The difference is that I made a conscious decision to create a more meaningful path.

Back in my mid-20’s I was directing the transmission output of the BBC TV channels from Television Centre to the whole country. Fast-forward twenty years and I was Director of Media Planning at the Discovery Channel where I was seeing the best and the worst of working life within a global US corporation. My intuition told me that this way of living and working was not right for me.

I felt like a square peg in a round hole and I didn’t need my intuition to tell me that I was bored and tolerating life.

Outwardly successful, and seemingly living the high life with all the trappings of success, I realised that my relationship with myself had taken a backseat to distractions and diversions. I was trapped by success. Looking back now I can see that I was living on auto-pilot, in fact I’d say I spent about 15 years ‘asleep’ and I didn’t like the look of the default future I was heading towards.

I realised that it was time to invest my time, energy & resources into creating a life that worked better for me. So I made some decisions:

  • A conscious decision to face fears.
  • A conscious decision to play by my own rules.
  • A conscious decision to take charge of my life.

Coach with dogs

After a summer sabbatical looking after a friend’s dogs near Rome I decided to train as a coach because I had a long-standing interest in personal and professional development. Building a coaching practice involved quitting a successful, well-paid career, taking risks, making sacrifices, learning by trial and error, experimenting and adapting, and a living through a period of uncertainty and insecurity. I made a conscious decision to do it anyway.

I discovered that my positive mindset is great for coaching, and that without realising it I’d always had a coaching style of leadership. I have a talent for getting to the crux of people’s issues, I’m curious, caring and empathetic which opens clients up in a way that generates clarity and choices for them. I have a scientific and creative mind which is great for understanding neuroscience and positive psychology then applying it in accessible ways with clients. The most powerful interventions I have personally experienced have been mindfulness and self-compassion which have transformed my relationship with myself.

I’d like to encourage you now to think about the change you want to create in your life, your business or the wider world.

Any change begins with a conversation. I’d love to start a conversation about the change you want to create to explore how I could support you.
